Former teammate Hwang Hee-chan turns into Jackie Chan

Raúl Jiménez (Fulham), who played alongside Hwang Hee-chan at Wolverhampton Wanderers until last season, received a red card for a tackle reminiscent of Jackie Chan and a professional wrestler.

“Jimenez was sent off for a completely insane tackle against Newcastle in which he transformed into Jackie Chan,” British media outlet The Sun reported on Sunday (June 17).

Fulham conceded three second-half goals to fall to a 0-3 defeat against Newcastle United in the 17th round of the 2023/24 Premier League on Sunday at St. James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

With the win, Newcastle improved to 29 points (9W2D6L) and moved up to sixth in the league, while Fulham, who remained on 21 points (6W3D8L), dropped to 11th. Fulham fans pointed to Jimenez, who was sent off in the early hours of the first half, as the reason for the defeat.

Jimenez, who started the game as a frontline striker, was booked in the first 20 minutes for a tackle on Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Jimenez jumped as high as he could to block Longstaff’s kick and was sent flying through the air towards Longstaff. Longstaff ended up getting knocked to the ground by Jimenez’s buttocks in a bizarre sequence.

The referee initially gave Jimenez a warning, but the video assistant referee (VAR) was immediately activated to challenge the call. According to the media, Michael Salisbury, who served as the VAR for the day, recommended that referee Samuel Barrett review the play.

At the request of the VAR room, Barrett went off the field to conduct an on-field review and determined that Jimenez’s tackle was a dangerous challenge that could have resulted in injury to a player, so he canceled the warning and issued a red card for a direct ejection.

Eventually outnumbered with one man sent off, Fulham finished the first half 0-0, but conceded three second-half goals to lose 0-3.

After the game, fans were outraged by the Jimenez tackle. Fans took to social media to mock Jimenez, saying, “What was he thinking?”, “It was like something out of WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment)”, “He moved like Jackie Chan in his prime”, and “Jimenez thought he was Rey Mysterio”.
