After ’20 years’ together, ‘legend’ reverses course in two days
Jesús Navas will finish his career at Sevilla.
“Navas has agreed with the club to continue playing for Sevilla until December 31, 2024 and then work in a position of his choice,” the club announced on Monday.
Born in 1985, the Spanish “multi-player” Navas is a Sevilla legend. He came up through the Sevilla youth ranks and was called up to the first team in 2003, where he began his professional career and was an integral part of the team’s core for nearly a decade. His performances helped Sevilla win two UEFA Europa League titles, two UEL titles, and two Copa del Rey titles.
In 2013, he ended his long association with Sevilla. His next stop was Manchester City. At the time, City were on the rise under Sheikh bin Mansour’s ownership with a lot of capital, and Navas was a solid rotation player, contributing to the team’s rise. His final tally for City was eight goals and 35 assists in 183 games. After nearly four years in England, Navas returned to his hometown club Sevilla for the 2017-18 season.
Navas is back in Spain. The 30-year-old has been playing well beyond his years and has become a mainstay of the team. His performances helped Sevilla win two more UEL titles, and he was named UEL Player of the Year in 2022-23. This season, he’s been an integral part of the team again, with two assists in 35 appearances.
Navas is nearing the end of his career. He will leave Sevilla at the end of the season. “The club’s ‘legend’ Navas will leave Sevilla at the end of the season. He will leave Sevilla as the club’s most capped player and winner of the most titles,” the club announced.
However, just two days later, he reversed his decision. He signed a short-term contract with Sevilla. “President José María del Nido Carrasco and Navas agreed this 사설토토 morning to extend his contract until December 31, 2024. The club’s youth product will continue to work for the club for the rest of his life, in whatever position he chooses, even after he leaves the field.”
“Navas told the fans: ‘I didn’t hesitate for a second to answer the club’s offer in the affirmative. I want to finish my career here, and I’m happy to be linked to the club I love,” Navas told the fans.
